An educational campaign on how to properly dispose of cafeteria food waste to create useful compost instead of trash.
Know Before You Throw is transforming the way this middle school disposes of food waste from the cafeteria by implementing a composting system to turn old scraps and cardboard into nutrient-rich compost. They use the compost at the school garden, helping to lower the amount of water needed to keep it alive while diverting tons of waste from ending up in landfills. In addition to installing the compost system, the team held weekly contests during the lunch period to teach students proper waste sorting, giving away a decomposable set of utensils for winners. The team hopes to keep the project moving forward by recruiting younger classmates to join the climate club, install more composting bins, and keep their momentum growing.
