Rooted at Home

Woodland Hills Academy Humanities Magnet

A student-led movement connecting water sustainability to the things we grow, eat, and wear.

Rooted at Home focuses on water consumption and easy ways to avoid waste through a multi-part initiative focused on four seemingly diverse but interconnected areas: water education, gardens, fashion, and food. The team developed and prototyped various campaigns across their own school. The Water Group built an interactive, educational quiz now completed by 84 students. The Garden Group assembled and distributed 198 California poppy growing kits to restore native plants. The Fashion Group designed and distributed 84 patches to students who committed to slow fashion, conserving an estimated 58,800 gallons by extending the life of existing clothing. And, through the Food Group’s Meatless Monday pledge, 98 students committed to one meatless meal every Monday for five weeks — conserving 107,800 gallons of water. Their website hosts all of this work and will be used to expand their initiatives to the greater school community at an upcoming fair and, hopefully, even wider LAUSD adoption.
